Chapter Fifteen

Micah

Aiden turns to look at me with a grin on his face after he hangs up with Dimitri, “He’s on his way.”

″Are you sure this is the right thing to do? I don’t even know what I want, Aiden.”

″You both need this, Micah, for different reasons sure, but you both need it.”

″I don’t understand though.”

″Take it on faith.”

I laugh bitterly at the word faith. I lost that when I was a child after learning the hard way that I’m on my own. My religious mother constantly dragged me to church, kicking and screaming most of the time. If she knew what I was, she’d probably murder me herself in the name of saving my soul. I think back to my conversation with Aiden about this whole mess.

″You want me to start at the beginning?” Aiden groans, “Do you know how long of a story this is gonna be?”

″I don’t care. I need to understand this,” I cross my arms over my chest in defiance.

Aiden rolls his eyes at me, “Fine. You know bruatars are considered to be children of Melinoe, right?”

″Yes?”

″Well, she was one of the first succubi. She liked having children with mortal men. Melinoe passed her ability to dreamwalk down through her bloodline. Her children were all born mortal with only some of her abilities. It made her descendants very appealing to both sides of the world.”

″What do you mean both sides?”

″Supernaturals and humans. Both sides would seek out the bruatars but for different reasons. Humans hoped to exploit their premonitions to gain an advantage over their adversaries. They would use experimental drugs on those who had foresight to induce premonitions. Others were used as bait to lure supernaturals out so they could be captured.”

My breath hitches, the whole thing sounds so barbaric, “Why?”

″For the same reason all wars are waged, Micah. Fear. Humans have always feared what they don’t understand. Bruatars were what sparked the witch hunts. Real warlocks and witches know how to stay hidden,” Aiden smirks, but it doesn’t meet his eyes, and I can tell there’s a story there, “We keep to ourselves or with the supernaturals.”

″So every ‘witch’ burned was a bruatar?”

The smile on his face falters, “Yes, they nearly eradicated your kind. It’s part of the reason why I didn’t believe you were one. A real bruatar is extremely rare.”

″A real bruatar?”

″Some supernaturals have mistaken someone struggling with run-of-the-mill nightmares as a bruatar before.”

″I don’t understand. What’s the difference?”

″Well, like I said, some bruatars have foresight or premonitions. But a real bruatar will only have nightmares, never knowing a good dream. The myth around them says it’s a curse of their relation to Melinoe. Most bruatars end up committed because they slip into insanity from lack of sleep. But then who can blame them? I know I wouldn’t want to go to sleep if all I ever saw was vicious, horrific images.”

″So, how did only Dimitri figure out what I was?”

″Because he projected into your dreams. It’s an incubus ability. If you didn’t have such unique control over your emotions, you would have been found ages ago.
